Meet the Artist

VILIA WOOD MARSHALL

Born in Winston-Salem November 14th 1943

EDUCATION:

I attended Ardmore Elementary School and graduated from R J Reynolds High School in 1962.  Then studied Biology, Art and Drama at Western Carolina University 1962-1964 transferring to Bowman Gray School of Cytology in 1964, graduating in 1965.  After getting married and adopting two children, I went back to school at UNC-G to finish my BFA in 1970.  After graduation, I studied with Gary Cook at Wake Forest in drawing for two years.  I then attended classes with Alex Hitchcock at the Sawtooth Center in “life drawing” classes and another instructor whose name was “Buddy” in printmaking.  His classes were so much fun, I didn’t realize how much his influence would shape the rest of my career.  From Buddy’s classes I decided to attend Wake Forest University’s Master of Liberal Arts program and graduated with honors in 1991.  My thesis was titled “The Visual Interpretation of Rhapsody in Blue”.

SHOWS:

After the wonderful experience with David Faber and Alex Hitchcock at Wake Forest University, I joined the Muddy River Art Association and showed my work with them for several years (1990 – 2000).  Since then, I’ve had one woman shows at libraries in Lewisville, Asheville, Winston-Salem and now Mt. Airy.

I started drawing in the summer of the seventh grade and have enjoyed a very gratifying and challenging hobby ever since.  From small sketches to very large scenery sets for Hazel Meilstrup Dance Studios for 19 years, the scope of my challenges have been wide, buT always fun.

RECENT SUBJECTS:

Musical interpretations, dancers, flowers and fairies.
