Internet Access Policy:


The Galax-Carroll Regional Library does not control the information on the network, and cannot be held responsible for its content.  While library staff will assist patrons in accessing the Internet, and will provide pointers to resources that have been judged to be reliable, users are encouraged to be critical consumers and to evaluate information carefully.

The Galax-Carroll Regional Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from its connections to the Internet.  Internet users are cautioned that the Internet is not a secure medium and the privacy of electronic communication cannot be guaranteed.  All transactions, files, and communication are vulnerable to unauthorized access.

Policy:

No sign in at the desk.  Must have a valid library card to use the library computers.

Patrons must be in good standing to use the Internet, meaning that if you owe fines or fees you are not eligible to use the Internet until your account is cleared.

Adults 18 or older with local address must present a valid library card to use the Library's computers.  Non-local patrons must present a valid picture ID or a valid Mountain Catalog Consortium card.

Guest or out-of-town users must obtain a guest log in number from library staff to use the computers.

Youth between the ages of 8 - 18 must have a parent, guardian  or responsible adult's signature on file with the library.

Children under the age of 8 may not use the Internet unless under direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or adult care provider.  The adult must stay with the child for the entire time on the Internet.

Computer Sign-Up Policy:

A patron must sign in to use the Internet with their Galax-Carroll Regional Library card. The system will automatically check the patron's account  and will not let the patron log on to the internet if there is a fine or a fee on the account.

Once a patron is finished with their Internet session, they should click "Done" to sign out of the computer.

Lab Rules:

Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Minor patrons will be assigned a filtered Internet computer in the Youth Services section of the library.

NO food or tobacco products are allowed in the Computer Lab. Non-Alcoholic drinks with a secure lid are allowed.

Patrons are financially responsible for all print jobs that are sent from the computer. 

Time limits are:

    Galax Public Library - 180 minutes per session, limit 2 sessions per day

   Carroll County Library -  1 - 120 minute session with option to ask for 60 additional minutes

Library staff are available for limited help. 

The Galax-Carroll Regional Library does not provide e-mail accounts.  Free accounts are available on the Internet. The library does not maintain these accounts.

No downloading of any software.

Hacking is strictly prohibited.

The Galax-Carroll Regional Library reserves the right to monitor computer use and content.

Viewing pornography materials is strictly prohibited.

Failure to comply with the above rules and/or disruptive behavior of either adult or minor patrons can result in the suspension or termination of computer use privileges.

Printing Policy:

The Carroll County Library lab provides the capabilities to print to both a color and a black/white printer.

Galax Public Library does not provide a color printer to the public. 

Patrons may not bring any specialty/photo papers to use in the library printers or copiers.

The patron is financially responsible for all print jobs sent to the printer from their computer. Multiple prints, prints with one word on them, color prints and drafts become the responsibility of the patron.

The librarian is there to ensure that the prints are sent to the correct printer. IF you need help please ask.
